چکیده
Insular pollination systems are more extinction-prone and vulnerable to invasive species than mainland ones. They often have plants with reproductive mechanisms allowing for self-compatibility low species-rich communities of pollinators. Here, we document different traits the tropical tree Guaiacum sanctum on two insular populations contrasting pollinator assemblages: Guánica in Puerto Rico alien honeybees Mona Island where do not occur. Using field observations experiments, evaluated richness, visitation rates, breeding system, fitness selfed- vs. crossed-progenies. We found that flowers pollinated by insects both islands, but while richness pollinators was higher Mona, rates were considerably trees almost exclusively visited introduced Apis mellifera. Flowers apomictic, autogamy is negligible indicating required set fruits. Outcrossing yielded nearly twice number fruits seeds selfing these differences consistent between populations, which might reflect early acting inbreeding depression, partial self-incompatibility, or resource allocation selfed outcrossed Our combined results suggest substantial reduction visitors areas dominated A. mellifera may add an additional level vulnerability threatened populations. Although Guánica, mostly due services provided mellifera, this population be susceptible environmental changes large-scale disturbances affecting abundance given reduced diversity flower visitors.

Genetic diversity in the endangered tropical tree, Guaiacum sanctum (Zygophyllaceae).
Fragmentation of tropical forests has changed continuous tropical landscapes into a network of poorly connected fragments, reducing population sizes and potentially increasing genetic isolation. This study quantifies genetic diversity within and among the 7 extant populations of the endangered tropical tree Guaiacum sanctum in Costa Rica. We describe how genetic diversity differs between popula...
متن کاملBreeding system and pollination ecology of two Abrus species (Fabaceae) from tropical West Africa
The pollination and breeding strategies of two Abrus species (A. precatorius L. and A. pulchellus Wall. ex Thw.) were comparatively investigated in Nigeria, West Africa. Observations were made on the phenology, floral morphology and architecture, breeding and pollination system, as well as flower-insect interactions. During 1999–2000, Abrus precatorius was observed to flower twice a year (April...
متن کاملPhenotypic selection on flowering phenology and pollination efficiency traits between Primula populations with different pollinator assemblages
Floral traits have largely been attributed to phenotypic selection in plant-pollinator interactions. However, the strength of this link has rarely been ascertained with real pollinators. We conducted pollinator observations and estimated selection through female fitness on flowering phenology and floral traits between two Primula secundiflora populations. We quantified pollinator-mediated selec...
متن کاملSpatial structure and genetic diversity of two tropical tree species with contrasting breeding systems and different ploidy levels.
Analyses of the spatial distribution pattern, spatial genetic structure and of genetic diversity were carried out in two tropical tree species with contrasting breeding systems and different ploidy levels using a 50-ha demographic plot in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Peninsular Malaysia. Shorea leprosula is a diploid and predominantly outcrossed species, whereas S. ovalis ssp. sericea is an ...
متن کاملBreeding system and pollination of two closely related bamboo species
An understanding of the breeding systems and pollination of agriculturally important plants is critical to germplasm improvement. Breeding system characteristics greatly influence the amount and spatial distribution of genetic variation within and amongst populations and influence the rarity and extinction vulnerability of plant species. Many woody bamboos have a long vegetative period (20-150 ...
